What is Plastic Strapping?
Plastic strapping is a high-tensile strength banding material used in a wide variety of packaging, bundling, carton closing, and palletising applications. It is economical, strong, elastic, and recyclable. Plastic straps are moisture-resistant and effective across a wide temperature range.
What is Plastic Strapping Made From?
Plastic strapping is made from Polypropylene (PP) or Polyester (PET). Nylon is another option, though less common today. Polypropylene straps are typically made from virgin resins or a virgin/recycled blend depending on the quality required. Machine-grade strapping is usually made from virgin material to maintain process efficiency. PET strapping can be made with up to 100% recycled content, such as recycled bottles or reprocessed pellets, while maintaining near-virgin quality.
What is Polypropylene (PP) Strap?
PP strapping is the most widely used plastic strap due to its versatility and low cost. When tensioned to its working range (20-40% of breaking strength), it typically elongates 4-10%, providing tight straps with elastic recovery. It is stable from freezing to high ambient temperatures and can be used outdoors for limited periods. Black PP strap is best for outdoor use. It is water and moisture-resistant and is used for general-purpose bundling, carton closing, and palletising. UV life ranges from 30 to 90 days depending on exposure.
What is Polyester (PET) Strap?
PET strapping is a low-elongation, “steel-like” plastic strap. When tensioned to its working range (20-40% of breaking strength), standard PET elongates 2-6%, maintaining initial tension longer than PP straps. PET is relatively unaffected by temperature extremes and standard PET resists UV deterioration for several months, with special formulations for longer storage. It is commonly used for larger, heavier loads or products that settle, expand, or require long-term storage.
Can Plastic Strapping Be Recycled?
Yes. Plastic strapping contains 30% or more recycled content and is 100% recyclable along with other rigid plastics.
